Iron biominerals: biologically controlled mineralization in magnetotactic bacteria; synthesis and characterization of magnetic iron oxide and iron sulfide nanoparticles and biomimetic nanostructures.
   
Characterization of individual atmospheric aerosol particles in order to understand their formation, transport, and their roles in atmospheric processes and in global climate change.
   
Application of advanced transmission electron microscopy techniques to environmental mineralogy problems.
